Reading Gait Patterns: Walk, Trot, Bound, and Gallop
Two tracks side by side can look identical and still belong to very different stories, because a single print only ever shows you a foot. The pattern those prints make as a trail unfolds — how far apart they are, how they're offset side to side, whether they cluster in groups — is what tells you how the animal was actually moving, and that's often the fastest route to identifying it, and to understanding what was actually happening when it passed through.
Walking: an even, alternating line
A walk is the slowest, most economical gait, and it shows up as a steady, evenly spaced line of prints, left-right-left-right, each one roughly the same distance from the last. Many walking mammals — deer, coyotes, house cats on a stroll — are also direct registers, meaning the hind foot lands squarely in (or very close to) the print the front foot on the same side just left. A clean, evenly spaced, direct-registering trail almost always means the animal was walking calmly, unhurried and unbothered. This is the gait you'll see the most of by far, since most animals spend most of their time simply moving between feeding, resting, and watering sites rather than running from or after something.
Trotting: same pattern, longer reach
A trot looks like a stretched-out walk — the same alternating left-right pattern, but with noticeably longer spacing between prints as the animal covers more ground per stride. Canids in particular are efficient trotters and can hold this pace for miles; a coyote's businesslike, mile-eating trail along a ridge is very often a trot, not a run. Bounding and loping: paired prints
Many mustelids — mink, weasels, otters — move in a distinctive bound where the hind feet land almost exactly in or just ahead of where the front feet just landed, producing pairs (or tight clusters) of prints with a noticeable gap of bare ground between each pair. It looks less like a line of individual footprints and more like a series of paired blotches marching forward. Rabbits and hares show a related but distinct pattern: a bounding gait where the larger hind feet land ahead of the smaller front feet, giving a track group that almost looks backwards to someone expecting front feet to lead.
Squirrels and other small rodents show a similar four-print bounding group at nearly every gait, since their body plan favors a bound over a true walk almost all the time — which is a useful reminder that "which gaits an animal normally uses" is itself a clue to its identity, on top of what any single gait tells you about its speed in that moment.
Galloping: four separate prints, wide spacing
A full gallop — the fastest gait most mammals use, reserved for genuine urgency — produces groups of four distinct prints (rather than the paired look of a bound), followed by a long gap where the animal was airborne between bounds. Deer fleeing a perceived threat, or any mid-sized mammal in a genuine hurry, will often show this: a tight cluster of four separate footfalls, then a conspicuous empty stretch of ground, repeating. The longer that empty stretch relative to the animal's leg length, the faster it was moving.
Why the distinction actually matters
Gait tells you about the animal's state of mind and situation, not just its species. A deer trail that's an even, calmly spaced walk one moment and switches abruptly to a wide-spaced gallop is telling you something happened right at that point — a predator, a startling noise, a scent on the wind — and that transition point is often worth a closer look for what triggered it. Gait can also help confirm or rule out a species guess: an animal you suspect is a bounding weasel but whose trail shows a steady, evenly spaced walking line instead is probably something else entirely.
A sudden shift to a gallop is also a cue worth taking seriously for your own safety, not just as tracking trivia. If a trail shows an animal breaking abruptly from a calm walk into a full, wide-spaced gallop, something in that spot startled or pursued it — and if you're finding that transition point yourself, in the moment, on a trail you're actively following, that's a reasonable point to pause, look around, and reassess rather than push straight on into whatever caused it. This matters most with large or potentially dangerous animals: fresh sign that a bear, big cat, moose, or wild boar bolted from a spot is a signal to leave the area, not to go find out why.
Reading a mixed-species trail carefully
Where two trails cross or run alongside each other — a predator's trail overlapping a prey trail, or two animals of the same species traveling together — gait is often what untangles them when the prints themselves are too degraded to tell apart. A calm walking trail suddenly joined by a second, faster-gaited trail converging on the same line is worth reading as a real event: something changed for at least one of those animals right at that junction. Resist the urge to narrate a dramatic story from limited evidence, though — two trails crossing doesn't necessarily mean an encounter happened between them, only that both animals used the same ground, possibly hours apart.
Putting numbers on it
Beyond eyeballing the pattern, the actual relative stride length — how the stride compares to the animal's own hip height — is what quantifies "how fast is fast." That ratio, not the raw stride length alone, is why a mouse's tiny bound and a moose's huge lope can both register as the same relative gait despite the enormous difference in scale: a small animal's fast gait covers far less absolute ground per stride than a large animal's fast gait, even though both feel equally urgent to the animal making them. Terrain can fake a gait change
Before reading too much into a spacing change, rule out the boring explanation: uneven ground changes stride length on its own, with no change in the animal's intent at all. A slight uphill grade shortens stride; a downhill stretch or a patch of firm, open ground often lengthens it; a log, rock, or narrow gap can force an odd single-step adjustment that looks like a gait break in an otherwise even trail. Walk the surrounding ground yourself before concluding that a spacing change means the animal sped up or slowed down — if the terrain itself explains it, that's the simpler and usually correct answer.
Common misreadings worth knowing about
A few situations trip up newer trackers reliably. Two animals of the same species walking one behind the other on the same line can look, at a glance, like one animal's trail with an odd double-registered print pattern — look for subtle size differences or a second, slightly offset line to catch this. A trail crossing wet ground and then dry ground can appear to change gait when it's really just changing visibility, with prints on the dry stretch simply harder to see rather than genuinely absent. And an animal picking its way carefully across a stream, log, or rocky patch will often show a slower, more deliberate, evenly spaced pattern that can resemble a calm walk even in a species that's normally skittish — the substrate is dictating the pace here, not the animal's mood.

To actually classify a gait rather than guess at it, measure the stride length — the distance between two successive prints of the same foot, not the distance between a left and a right print — and pace off or estimate the animal's hip height from its general size.
